I've had a few questions recently about my hearing impairment and how I get around it and thought, I'd like to share some of that side of me 😊 'I have Auditory Processing Disorder'
APD, also known as central auditory processing disorder, isn't hearing loss or a learning disorder. It means your brain doesn't "hear" sounds in the usual way. APD isn’t a problem with understanding meaning, the ears and brain just don't fully coordinate with each other properly. 👂🧠 How do I juggle this with my job?
Most musicians wear in-ear monitors on stage to be able to hear in loud environments... I just need to wear mine to be able to hear at all, in all noisy environments like singing or playing especially. Sometimes I can get away with not using in-ears when I play through muscle memory (only as duo) in Oh Harlow performances but it’s exhausting.

When did you know you had a hearing impairment?
I was only diagnosed in late primary school because I'd taught myself to lip-read from a young age. Teachers noticed I always faced people directly but often didn’t look people in the eyes all the time. 💛 Hopefully this makes more sense about me 🙂 💛
